Kettlebell Military Press Variations: Use the Same Weight, Increase the Difficulty

The kettlebell military press is a great exercise for building overall shoulder strength. It takes the shoulder through a wide range of motions starting from the rack position up to lockout. As in most kettlebell exercises, the kettlebell military press can be altered to allow for greater challenges with the same size kettlebell. Why start using a heavier kettlebell before you master the seated pistol grip press with the weight you have?

As with all kettlebell exercises, make sure that you perform them in an area where you don't mind dropping the kettlebell. The following kettlebell military press variations are listed in order of difficulty; master each kettlebell military press before moving to the next one. If you master each one of these kettlebell military press exercises, I guarantee you will be stronger and you'll easily transition to a heavier weight.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Basic
The kettlebell military press is usually the first overhead kettlebell exercise people learn. It's a strict press where you keep your body as square as possible. Do not use a side bend to get the kettlebell overhead. If you notice yourself doing so, switch to a lighter kettlebell. Get the kettlebell into the rack position with your elbow tucked into your side, resting on your hip. From there, press the kettlebell straight up. Keep your core tight and make a fist with your other hand. Perform each kettlebell military press repetition at the natural pace that the weight will allow.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Palm Press
The next exercise is the palm press. Switch to the palm press as soon as you can perform 10 or more reps of the basic kettlebell military press. Pick up the kettlebell from the ground and position the ball portion in your palm. From there, press straight up. Keep your eye on the kettlebell at all times. This a great exercise to work the shoulder without being able use the leverage the kettlebell provides when it sits on your forearm. Keep your body tight throughout the duration.

Kettlebell Military Press Variation: Pistol Grip Press
The next progression is the pistol grip press. This is one of the best grip and forearm workouts you can get with a kettlebell. To start, clean the kettlebell to the rack position and carefully position it with the other hand so that the kettlebell is upside down. Hold the kettlebell in place by crushing the handle. Keep your eye on the kettlebell at all times, then press it overhead. Keep your body tight and make sure you do this in a place where dropping it is ok. The last thing you need is a contest between your head and the kettlebell if you lose your grip.

Kettlebell Military Press Variations: Seated Presses
The next step in kettlebell military press series is to perform the same kettlebell military press exercises, but now sitting on the floor. This requires a greater core flexion and takes away any bounce or help the legs might provide. This means the stress is almost completely put on the shoulder for each kettlebell military press repetition. Make sure you are not leaning against anything when you performs reps. The weight will feel heavier in a seated position.

To get the kettlebell into place, put it in front of you and pick it up with the hand you are going to press with. If the kettlebell is too heavy to muscle up with the pressing arm, assist with your free hand. Keep your back straight, tighten your core, and press. Go through the basic kettlebell military press, palm press, and pistol grip press exactly how you performed them standing.

Remember, kettlebells aren't just about lifting the most weight possible, it's about learning efficient ways to exercise, and then mastering those methods. Enjoy the process, don't rush it, and before you know it you'll be achieving greater gains then ever before.

Maurice Gibson was fed up with her gym.

A kettlebell is nothing more than a heavy weight with a handle often referred to as resembling a bowling ball or a cannon ball with a handle. You work out with a kettlebell by swinging it, pressing it and pulling it in all different directions. The thing that makes a kettlebell workout so intense is that you incorporate most of your major muscle groups to do the exercises instead of just one or two groups when doing traditional weight training exercises.

You can get an effective whole body fat burning, muscle building workout in about 20 minutes with a kettlebell.

14 Powerful Kettlebell Exercise Tips

These guidelines can help you get the most out of your kettlebell exercise routine. The following 15 tips will teach you the proper number of reps and sets to perform, when to work out, and what kind of workouts will sculpt the body you desire.

Train two to seven times a week. You must train on a regular basis if you wish to see any benefits. This should be a give-me, but many people look for push-button solutions. In the world of exercise, those buttons do not exist.
Work out for 45 minutes or less and you'll see the best results. Doing a few reps and then quitting won't get you anywhere. At the same time, you need to make sure you do not train for too long either. Working out for too long can actually make your exercise program less effective as various hormones in your body drop from peak levels after about 45 minutes of working out.
Total workout time should be altered. Keep your body guessing by switching things up every now and then. Increase your workout intensity by completing your exercises in 20 minutes one day and then taking it a little easier the next day by taking 40 minutes.
Perform as many exercises as you wish. You can do as many different kettlebell exercises as you wish. If you hit the whole body, make sure you're eating right to supply your body with the proper nutrients for the quickest recovery.
Vary the intensity of each exercise You don't have to hit every exercise super hard. Do a few intensely and a few with less intensity. This is similar to changing the time of your work outs. You'll adapt to different lifting situations do to this and you'll also fight off boredom more easily by having a more dynamic workout routine.
String exercises together in a circuit. Circuit training consists of performing an exercise, resting, performing a different one, resting, and repeating the sequence until the total number of sets is completed for each exercise. Circuit training will increase your strength and endurance levels.
Rest between your sets. You'll want to make sure your muscles are ready to go when you start each set. Make sure you rest at least 1 minute between each set.
Hurrying through strength exercises can spell disaster You want to get strong, but have some patience. Injuring yourself because you wanted to go too quickly and got sloppy is a sure fire way to hinder your progress. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare: "slow and steady wins the race".
Shorten the rest time for endurance training. When you are working on your endurance levels, you may want to compress your rest periods. Remember, you do not want to be in a hurry when strength training though.
Start hard. Finish easy. Starting your session with the hard exercises. Doing this will ensure you are at your freshest so that you have the coordination and strength to complete the exercises in good form.
Lift your kettlebells before endurance exercises.
Do as many sets as you wish. If you can do 500 sets, the more power to you. In most cases, however, you'll probably be wanting to perform 3 to 20 sets per exercise. You'll also want to vary the number of sets each time you work out. If you have only one kettlebell, try to add on a few more sets each time you work out.
Do not go to muscle failure. Some high intensity routines recommend you work a muscle to failure to damage your muscles as much as possible. The idea is that your muscles will be stimulated to repair themselves much more and you'll become much bigger. The goal with kettlebells is not to become big, but to have functional, whole body strength and endurance. Working out to muscle failure also increases the chance you'll go out of form, hurt yourself, or drop your weight on yourself. Either way, not pretty!
Do not do more than 5 reps per set with presses and side bends. Presses and side bends are difficult exercises to begin with. Doing more reps increases the chance you'll use poor form. Increase difficulty by using a heavier kettlebell. If you do not own a heavier kettlebell, compress rest period or perform more sets of 5 reps. You may also select a more difficult exercise, move slower, and pause at different points.

The Truth About Kettlebell Training

No well-rounded, killer training plan can be complete without kettlebells in my opinion.

However, is the kettlebell revolutions destined to crumble faster than Ricky Hatton's unbeaten record when something new comes in to excite peoples' training?

Personally I love the damn things. They've nearly killed me on a few occasions but still feel happy to have them around and have them in my life!

The question is are they just flavour of the month and only suited to certain people?

When are they really right for us?

Training goals

I like beating myself up in training. It's what I do. Yeah I want muscle and minimal body fat, but quite frankly I can't be bothered to think and act like a bodybuilder.

Kettlebells are awesome for my goals. They can be moved in such a way that it almost becomes an art form capable of destroying every muscle in your body in a matter of minutes.

I regularly perform complexes or circuits which leave me feeling like I got hit by a ton of bricks.

Try 5 rounds of 8 reps with two bells of double swings, double snatches, double jerks and renegade push-rows with some burpee-pull ups thrown in for extra pain.

However, if your sole training goal at a particular point is to optimise growth, I don't believe kettlebells are the way forward.

Sure you can alter tempo and work with escalating density parameters to ensure progressive overload for hypertrophy but I still believe the fastest and most effective way is to structure 90% of your training around the big lifts (squat, deadlifts, bench, rows).

Performing squats with bells heavy enough for significant hypertrophy is pretty much impossible.

For those more advanced, the chances are you don't have access to heavy enough bells for deadlifts.

Functional training

Let's be honest, most people who promote 'functional' training don't really know what they mean.

Bicep training through doing curls isn't functional apparently as it's not a compound movement or involve rotation.

But what about athletes who need a strong bear-hug style grip such as in the NFL or MMA?

However, I believe there are certain exercises and areas EVERYBODY should pay attention to regardless of goals. This includes shoulder mobility, stability and strength, glute strength and the posterior chain in general.

The nature of kettlebell training especially lifts such as the swing and snatch, windmill and get ups, force positive adaptations in these areas. Yes, these can be replicated with dumbbells and barbells but not with the same challenge to stabiliser muscles.

Even bodybuilders need to be doing this stuff unless they want shocking posture and bench press injuries.

What's REALLY working?

A lot of people do like I just did and promote kettlebells because they're great for the posterior chain.

This is true but only when the muscles involved are firing in the first place!

You may well want to kick butt in your training session and see if you can achieve 200 snatches in 10 minutes, but if your glutes aren't firing, all you will do is end up with an overactive lower back and eventually, a sore one!

Most peoples' glutes don't work and should be doing a lot of work to release their lower back muscle and fire up the glutes using bridges and single leg hip lifts.

(This applies to luinges, squats and any other exercise which is supposedly good for your buttocks!)

Power training

I believe everybody of any age, fitness level and goal needs to be doing power training.

However if we just look at the top end of the spectrum at those who want athletic ability and to improve sports performance, we hit a bit of a stumbling block.

Unless you have grown up as a gymnast or spend hours each week on mobility, practicing olympic lifts can be just too time consuming to let you get any other training done.

Now don't get me wrong, I think we SHOULD be doing a lot more mobility work than we do, but sometimes the time constraint of our goal just doesn't allow lots of this work to be done. Much of it requires a skilled trainer to work with which many just can't afford or access.

Whilst it still requires practice to master, kettlebell training enables power training to be done through single arm snatches and clean and jerks much more easily. I also think single arm power work is more applicable to many sports such as boxing, tennis and volleyball than barbell work anyway.

However, once you start getting to the heavy stuff, maneuvering kettlebells can become somewhat harder to move than a barbell, especially holding at the rack position.

For instance, cleaning an 80kg bar is easier for most than 2x40kg bells.

It's also easier to progress by adding 2.5-5kg at a time to the bar than going from 2x40kg to 2x44kg bells.

Again, the training goal matters.

If you want more speed endurance than raw power, kettlebells are probably more appropriate!

Versatility

This bits easy.

You can throw kettlebells around anywhere at anytime.

Kettlebells are just behind bodyweight training in the 'Get out the commercial gym world' stakes.

Kettlebell training wrapped up

The key to kettlebell training is understanding why you are using them. It sounds obvious but many use them just because they've heard a lot about them.

You also need to make sure you're firing up the right muscles and usign them properly or shoulder and back injuries won't be far behind - leave your fat ego at the door when learning kettlebells.

Get your glutes working first. Trust me on this!

They are like sharks - mess with them when you don't understand them and they will eat you alive.

7 Reasons to Get a Kettlebell

The Kettlebell is the only piece of fitness equipment I use (along with a swissball for some exercises). I have use the kettlebell to get into the best shape of my life, despite years of gym membership dues and hours and hours on spin bikes, rowing machines, cross trainers and weight machines. In fact, I have managed to ditch my gym membership which means I save money, as well as time (and fuel) by working out at home, thanks to this incredible bit of kit.

Here are 7 reasons you should get a kettlebell:

1. Kettlebells are the ultimate 'do anything' fitness tool - they are so versatile you can get a cardio, strength, endurance, flexibility and core stability workout with one piece of equipment, and even in the same workout.

2. Kettlebells are the ultimate home gym - as you can get all these benefits with one piece of equipment, and you only need a small amount of space to work out.

3. Kettlebells take up hardly any space in your home and you can easily store them out of the way - no more need to see your gym equipment staring at you as you are having dinner or tripping over it in your bedroom. You can store them in a cupboard and get them out when you need to use them - and you can use them inside or outside, making the most of good weather but staying sheltered when it's bad.

5. Kettlebell workouts can be short and sweet so you can fit them into the busiest of schedules. 6. The ballistic kettlebell exercises, such as the swing and snatch, rely on explosive power through the hips. This strengthens the hips and lower back, not only giving you a backside that looks great, but also making sure you are strong and injury-free in this commonly overlooked area.

How to Pick the Right Size Kettlebell For Your Workout

If I have been asked this once, I have been asked it a hundred times: What size kettlebell should I use? If I had my druthers, I would recommend that everyone who uses kettlebells purchase three of them right out of the gate - a pair of smaller kettlebells and one large kettlebell that might be a little too heavy at the moment of purchase. With this set-up, you will be able to accomplish virtually any goal you may have. For example, a female who has never lifted a weight in her life should buy a pair of 6 kg/13 lb kettlebells and one that is 12 kg/26 lbs.

However, having said that, I realize that the kettlebell is a brave new frontier for many people regardless of their level of fitness experience. Choosing the right one depends on what your goal(s) is(are).

Your choice may be different based on whether the kettlebell will be the #1 fitness tool for a home workout program or a tool for metabolic fat-loss workouts instead. It will also be different if you have never exercised vs. having consistently done strength training your whole life.

So you'll need to start by conducting an honest assessment of what your current capabilities are. Note: Those who have never exercised will generally under-estimate and those with significant experience will often over-estimate their ability.

Ok, let's look at some specific recommendations. I'm assuming that you are going to use the kettlebell as the dominate tool in your workout and that initially you will only be purchasing one kettlebell. I start with recommendations for advanced users and work down to beginners.

1. Intermediate Lifter - Has worked out consistently with weights 3x/wk for at least the last two years and knows how to perform "big lifts" such as the squat, deadlift, press, etc....

Recommended kettlebell size:
Men - 20 kg/44 lbs
Women - 12 kg/26 lbs

2. Beginner Lifter - Has consistently done resistance training at least 2x/wk for less than one year and has tried the "big lifts" but is not sure if he/she is using the correct technique.

Recommended kettlebell size:
Men - 16 kg/35 lbs
Women - 8 kg/17 lbs

3. Straight-off-the-street Lifter - Has not touched a weight in more than three years and can't remember what a "big lift" is or has never lifted a weight and never heard of a "big lift". His/her "exercise program" has consisted of nothing more than walking.

Recommended kettlebell size:
Men - 12 kg/26 lbs
Women - 6 kg/13 lbs

These are my base recommendations for someone who is only going to purchase one kettlebell. And believe it or not one kettlebell used consistently will automatically put you on the path to fitness success. If you follow this simple selection chart, you will not only enjoy your first kettlebell experience but also get the most out if it whether your goal is fat-loss, strength, muscle building, or just plain getting healthy.
